About the Trenton Kiwanis
Our organization's name, Kiwanis, is an adaptation of the Native American phrase that can be translated, "We make a noise." True to our namesake, the Trenton Kiwanis Club recently completed its 2005-2006 fundraising year with such a bang that the ears of local charity and youth organizations are still ringing from the news.
A service club of only 40 active members, Trenton Kiwanians raised over $90,000.00 last year through a variety of innovative fundraising activities:
- Now a provincial institution, the Kiwanis Fishing Weekend (Walleye World) again proved the Club's primary revenue generator, with over 4,600 Ontario fishermen participating in the Walleye and Pike Tournament.
- The Kiwanis Golf Classic, coupled with radiothons sponsored by local radio stations, raised $30,000.00 for Camp Trillium, a camp for young children with cancer.
- The Club also sponsored the Home & Sports Show held at the Trenton Municipal Arena.
- The Christmas lunch raised $20,000 for the Salvation Army.
It is estimated that Trenton Kiwanis' contributions touched the lives of over 8,000 local youths last year through sponsorship of many local sports teams (including hockey, soccer, softball, baseball, football, curling, etc.). Funds were also provided to support such causes as the Salvation Army Camp, the Trenton Big Brothers & Big Sisters, the 4H Club, the Brownie Camp, the Quinte Regional Science Fair, student scholarships, and dozens of other youth organizations. Belleville, Brighton, Picton and Napanee youth are helped in a similar way by Kiwanis and the Rotary and the Rod & Gun Club in their area.
Who are Kiwanis? We are local businessmen from Trenton, Belleville and Picton and good friends who meet weekly for dinner and to plan events. Membership in Kiwanis offers opportunities to expand business and professional networks, develop personal support in the community, and provides an arena in which to develop and use leadership skills through chairmanship of our committees or fundraising projects.
The Kiwanis Clubs are seeking new members to join in fun, fellowship, and community service. Beyond weekly club meetings, the investment of volunteer time is relatively insignificant when compared to the rewards of lasting friendship, personal contacts, exposure to local issues, and hands-on involvement in providing needed services to our community.
