Walleye World Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

WHY THE FIRST WEEKEND IN MAY?

The area referred to as "Ministry of Natural Resources area 8", is the first area in Ontario to open for the spring fishing of walleye and pike. Fishermen are anxious to get started after a long winter and this is one of the best places in the world to catch these species.

WHAT ABOUT THE SLOT SIZE?

As we indicated, the slot size was under review and was changed one day before the season started last year. Only one fish 63cm and larger can be caught per day.

WHERE IS AREA 8?

This fishing area is very large. Popular areas to fish include Brighton Bay, the Trent and Napanee Rivers, The Bay of Quinte bordering Trenton, Belleville, east to Napanee, Big Bay, Telegraph narrows, East and West lake, Lake Consecon and all the waters near Picton

WHERE CAN WE STAY?

There are many hotels, motels and campgrounds in the area. If you are having trouble finding a spot, send us a message for more information.

HOW MANY IN A BOAT?

We don't have any say about this. We remind you to be safe and not overload your boat. BUT, everyone in the boat must have a contest licence.

IS THIS EVENT LIVE RELEASE ONLY?

Yes!

DO KIWANIS MEMBERS GET ANY MONEY FROM THE EVENT?

No. All money raised goes to worthwhile projects to help children at regular camp, cancer camp, minor sports, church and hospital projects, etc. All Kiwanis, Rotary, Napanee Rod and Gun and others volunteer their labour as a member of their community.

CAN I BUY MY TICKET ON SATURDAY?

No. All ticket sales are over at Midnight Friday May 4th, 2007. We are sorry that tickets will not be sold after that time.

WHERE CAN I LAUNCH MY BOAT?

Our area has many launch facilities, in Brighton, Trenton, Belleville, Picton, Napanee, Hay Bay, plus many others. If you have any trouble e-mail us or call the Chamber of Commerce in the area of interest.

WHERE DO YOU PUT THE TAGGED WALLEYE?

We tag the fish one week or two weeks before the event and release them all over area 8. Your chances of catching a tagged fish is the same in all of the areas.

HOW DO YOU DECIDE WHICH TAG IS WORTH MORE MONEY?

After releasing the fish we conduct a draw from the tag numbers used, so we know which tags are worth $5,000 and which one is for $20,000 and which one is for the Dodge Dakota lease. All of the other Tags are worth $1,000 each.

In this way we do not know where the fish with the higher value tags were released. We have, on occasion, had municipal officials, contestants and the news officials witness the tagging and release of the fish.

CAN WE BE IN MORE THAN ONE EVENT AT THE SAME TIME?

Yes you can. All people in a boat must have a ticket. We encourage fishermen fishing area 8 in the opening season to support as many events as possible. However be aware that each fish, once entered, is live released. You cannot have the fish once entered in this event. Also, be sure you are entering your fish in the correct event.

WHERE ARE THE PRIZES PRESENTED?

We present all prizes at the Trenton Kiwanis headquarters, in the tent in Centennial Park on Sunday at 6:00 p.m. We have a good time presenting the prizes, especially to the children, so come and join us in this celebration. We also have our extra draws if a tagged fish is not caught and you are eligible to win one of the draw prizes. Big Jim McLaughlin is scheduled to be on hand.

ARE OTHER CLUBS INVOLVED?

Yes. The Belleville Kiwanis will have their live release tanks and weigh station and refreshments at the South George St. launch ramps in Belleville, near the Meyer's Pier.

Also the Picton Kiwanis will have live release tanks at the Picton Marina and at Foster's, Northport, and they will be manning their scales, and serving refreshments during the event.

The Napanee Rod and Gun Club is active in this event and will have their weigh stations in Deseronto, Pickerel Park and Perfect Vue.

The Brighton Rotary Club works hard and has their weigh station on Brighton Bay in Gosport.

IF I ENTER BY MAIL, HOW DO I GET MY HAT?

The first 5,000 entries receive a 1st Quality hat, however we do not send them out by mail when we send you your tickets. We keep your hat for you at the Trenton, Belleville, Picton, Brighton and Napanee weigh stations for you to pick up. Unless we are notified otherwise, all such hats will be kept at the Trenton headquarters, in the Big Top at the east side mouth of the Trent river.
