Fishing - Fishing

by Tom Wood

Close your eyes for a moment and picture this scene . . .

The warm summer sun is trying valiantly to burn its way through the light mist that envelops your boat. The rod in your hand is bucking wildly as you battle your third walleye of the morning. You are at peace with the world: you are fishing on the beautiful Bay of Quinte near Trenton.

We, the residents of the walleye capital of the world, surely are among the luckiest people on earth when it comes to fishing. The options we have at our finger tips are unlimited. You can be catching walleye, pike, bass, or panfish in the Trent River at 10:00 a.m., and by 11:00 a.m. you can be on Lake Ontario with a Chinook or a rainbow dancing on the end of your line.

But we, as Trentonians, already know about our fishing bonanza, so I'm going to dedicate this article to the new comer and the tourist. In Trenton and area, you will be welcomed by the nicest people you've ever met. You will find a community where everyone is on a first name basis and ready to assist you in any way possible. You will also find an area where walleye is king and he's not hard to catch.

. . . the rapids and pool below #1 dam is a real honey hole for walleye, and the same goes for the area near the high railway bridge.

In the Trent River, the rapids and pool below #1 dam is a real honey hole for walleye, and the same goes for the area near the high railway bridge. On the bay you will find equally terrific angling at the river mouth or along the numerous shoals to the East. The upper reaches of the Trent will produce some of the finest bass fishing available and the pike and muskey are ready and willing to make your day.

A short drive or boat ride will put you on Lake Ontario near Brighton, where record salmon and trout are boated each season.

For the avid angler you can literally fish twelve months out of the year in this area. By choosing your species and fishing zone, you can find a place to fish no matter what the season.

When mother nature turns the Bay of Quinte into a giant skating rink, walleye fishing takes on a whole new meaning. Snug and warm in your fishing hut, you will enjoy the bounties that hardwater angling brings. The aroma of freshly caught walleye or sweet yellow perch sizzling in the pan on a cold winter evening is an angler's little piece of heaven. I guess that's one of the reasons we like to refer to our area as the "Fisherman's Paradise."

The host of tackle shops, bait outlets, boat rental facilities and excellent accommodations along the numerous public boat launch ramps, makes Trenton the anglers dream town.

Ice anglers will enjoy comfortable, heated fishing huts, pre-cut holes and transportation by snowmobile to and from the fishing grounds, all for a moderate fee. You can even have hot meals delivered to your fish hut, should you desire such luxury.

So . . . no matter if you're just visiting the Trenton area or maybe you have recently taken up residence in the community, don't hold back, grab your rod and let's . . . Go Fishin'!
